Working Principle and Operating Techniques of Bending Machines

A press brake is a commonly used metalworking machine widely applied in industrial fields such as machinery manufacturing, automotive manufacturing, and shipbuilding.
By bending metal materials, it can produce parts and components of various shapes.
This article will provide an in-depth analysis of the working principle and operational techniques of press brakes, helping readers better understand and utilize them.
I. Working Principle
The bending machine operates by placing metal material on the worktable, then applying pressure and bending mechanisms to shape the material.
Specifically, it consists of two main components: the hydraulic system and the control system.
1. Hydraulic System
The hydraulic system is the core component, primarily comprising hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic pumps, and hydraulic valves.
During operation, the hydraulic pump delivers hydraulic fluid to the cylinders, generating pressure.
This pressure is then directed to the upper or lower dies via hydraulic valves, producing the required bending force.
The hydraulic system offers advantages such as high pressure and excellent stability, enabling bending of metal materials across various thicknesses.
2. Control System
The control system manages the press brake's operational process, primarily through electrical control and PLC control.
Electrical control relies on manual operation via buttons and switches to execute basic press brake functions.
PLC control, however, enables automated operation through pre-programmed sequences.
Operators can adjust parameters like bending angle and pressure through the control system while monitoring real-time bending process conditions.
II. Operating Techniques
Proper operating techniques ensure the safe and efficient operation of the press brake while enhancing product quality.
Below are some common press brake operating techniques:
1. Preparation
Before operating the press brake, preparatory work is required.
Check that all components of the press brake are functioning normally and ensure the hydraulic oil level is sufficient.
Verify that the metal material to be processed meets requirements and clean the worktable, dies, and other equipment.
2. Die Adjustment
Select appropriate dies based on the workpiece dimensions and shape, then install them correctly on the press brake.
When adjusting dies, pay attention to parameters such as die position, angle, and clamping force to ensure processing results meet requirements.
3. Parameter Setting
Set parameters like bending angle, pressure, and speed using the control system according to processing requirements.
These parameters can be determined based on material properties and thickness; generally, harder materials require higher pressure and slower speeds.
4. Begin Processing
After confirming all parameters are correctly set, initiate processing.
Position the metal material on the workbench, secure it using fixtures or foot clamps, and press the operation button to start the press brake. Upon completion, promptly release the clamps and remove the processed workpiece.
Summary: The press brake is a vital metalworking machine. Through the coordinated operation of its hydraulic and control systems, it bends metal materials to produce components and parts of various shapes.
When operating the press brake, pay attention to preparatory work, die adjustment, parameter setting, and employing appropriate techniques based on the material and requirements of the workpiece.
Only through correct operation and efficient utilization of the press brake can product quality and production efficiency be enhanced.
